This year’s St James Street Festival was held on Sunday 11th September. The event ran from midday – 6.00pm, and Mount Anvil provided volunteer support from site managers and staff.
The St James Street Festival is a fast-growing community event in Hammersmith that raises money for Maggie’s West London Cancer Care Centre, a charity providing vital support for cancer patients and their families at Charing Cross Hospital. As Cllr Sue Fennimore, Hammersmith & Fulham's Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, says, “It is fantastic that such a worthy local charity is being supported by brilliant local people in a way that brings all members of the community together”.
The festival began last year, in memory of a local resident, Jane Eggleston, who died suddenly from lung cancer in her early sixties. She had lived in the street for thirty years.
Centred around bustling stalls and stands on St James Street, close to our Queen’s Wharf development, the event is organised by a group of Hammersmith residents and supported by their neighbours and the local council. This year's stalls included home-baked cakes, face-painting, antiques and books, as well as a barbecue. Visitors to the festival were entertained with a programme of live music, fortune telling, balloon modelling and more.
Mount Anvil staff welcomed the chance to meet a wide range of local residents, small business owners and well-wishers, and enjoyed many conversations about on-site employment, apprenticeship and procurement opportunities. A staggering £10,000 was raised this year thanks to the support of visitors and local residents. We look forward to next year’s festival and assisting with the efforts to once again raise money for Maggie’s as well as supporting future events in the community.
