Construction Update: Building the Future of Riverside Studios

The new Riverside Studios will be a cultural destination for London, designed to enhance the way people experience the arts. With a focus on welcoming new artists and new audiences, the studios will feature cutting-edge integrated technologies that change the ways people see, feel and interact with the pieces showcased there.  

Founded in the 1930s and bought by the BBC in 1954, Riverside Studios had an illustrious start, producing classic British films and television shows including Hancock's Half Hour and Dr Who. By the turn of the millennium, the studios had firmly established its reputation for pushing boundaries across the arts, developing relationships with many significant contemporary theatre and dance groups, artists and directors. It was also still home to a number of television shows, including Top of the Pops and, most famously, Chris Evans' TFI Friday. Its past has seen Riverside Studios hosting some of the world's best theatre, comedy and music, and visual arts from the likes of Anthony Gormley, Yoko Ono and Edward Munch. Its future is even brighter. 

Riverside Studios will retain the sense of community and the commitment to promoting world-class performing arts that won them a coveted Love London Award last year. The new spaces will allow the studios to expand and explore new art forms and avenues, with new television studios, a 200 seat cinema, screening room, rehearsal areas and a dedicated space for local events.

Panoramic views of the Thames will provide the backdrop for Riverside Studios’ new foyer, while bars and restaurants overlooking the river will make this a vibrant, vital new centre for Hammersmith. A new public Thames-side walkway is being created and will run across the front of the building, linking with the Thames Path and allowing people to walk along the river all the way from Barnes Bridge to Craven Cottage.

With internal architectural design led by award-winning architects Flanagan Lawrence, this is going to be a striking, dynamic and much-loved centre for the arts in West London.
