Newlon selects Mount Anvil as joint venture partner
Newlon Housing Trust has selected Mount Anvil as its development partner for the proposed transformation of the Barnsbury Estate in Islington. The announcement comes after a competitive tender and selection process, in which a number of the estate’s residents took part, to select a partner with the character and capability to deliver an outstanding new place for the community.
The Barnsbury Estate is a 646 home estate built between the 1930s and 1970s. In 2019 Newlon started an extensive consultation with its residents about the possibility of a large-scale transformation which would offer safe, comfortable homes that meet their needs long into the future. As a key part of the process Newlon has chosen Mount Anvil as its partner for the proposed transformation, which will include the full refurbishment of the Old Barnsbury homes and redevelopment of New Barnsbury. Having received credible bids from three companies, London specialist Mount Anvil’s ability to focus on the needs of this community stood out, and now the newly-formed partnership looks forward to the residents’ ballot and the future for the Barnsbury Estate.
Newlon and Mount Anvil plan to deliver an increased number of mixed-tenure homes of which at least 50% will be new affordable housing. Mount Anvil has the option of deploying capital made available thanks to their unique GLA Investment Partner status to deliver the homes alongside Newlon, which is one of the GLA’s Strategic Development Partners.
Mike Hinch, Chief Executive of Newlon Housing Trust said: “We’re delighted to be working with Mount Anvil following their impressive bid. Subject to a successful residents’ ballot we look forward to using our complementary skills to transform the Barnsbury Estate into a sustainable, high quality place to live.”
Killian Hurley, CEO of Mount Anvil adds: “We’re delighted to have won this competitive process and look forward to the opportunity to work with Newlon and residents to transform their estate. Our goal is to develop quality homes and leave a positive, sustainable and successful legacy wherever we work in London. We hope that, following an initial warm welcome from the residents, we’ll have their support at the ballot and be able to deliver on our promises for the community.”
